yay for parasols!!

I found this beautifully painted parasol for 50 cents at a thrift store yesterday! I was so excited! There are rips in the paper(its like tissue wrapping paper) and i want to fix it up. I thought i might need to put another stick in, but none are missing, its just ripped all the way up. I plan on patching it, was wondering if anyone has done this before? I figure its like colaging the peices back together. Any suggestions?

Rice paper and wheat paste are the traditional materials, but some watered down Elmer's glue should do it. Rice paper is ideal, tissue paper if you can't find it, apply the glue with a paintbrush. the Filipino paper stars for Christmas are made this way, so I know it works.
