I found this beautifully painted parasol for 50 cents at a thrift store yesterday! I was so excited! There are rips in the paper(its like tissue wrapping paper) and i want to fix it up. I thought i might need to put another stick in, but none are missing, its just ripped all the way up. I plan on patching it, was wondering if anyone has done this before? I figure its like colaging the peices back together. Any suggestions?

hey folks,
i'm teaching a collage workshop next month here in seattle, and i wanted to ask you all for input on what your favorite tricks and techniques are. i don't feel like i need to teach anyone cut-and-paste style collage, since it's pretty intuitive. but i wil cover acetone transfers, and i'd really like to learn other types of transfers as well. what kinds of things have you done that you've found really innovative and unique?

oh, and by the way, here's a shameless plug for my workshop:

What do we owe photographers and other creative folks behind the images we use?

I'm presenting this as an open topic for discussion. Although I take some of the pictures and make some of the images, I know my collages are what they are partly because of the amazing work of some great photographers. Yet, I have never attempted to save the names of the photographers and credit them on the collage. I am not worried so much about laws and money but more about the ethics and the golden rule. I would like to be credited for my creative work, and in the best of worlds compensated and asked permission. This has kept me from selling my collages except for non-profit fundraising for others. I know the discussions of copyright and fair use can be epic and perhaps these laws have some moral base but I'm more interested in people's personal feelings about this. Does anyone make an effort to credit all those they can? I'm thinking about trying this if it doesn't take the fun out of it for me.

International Collage Exhibition and Exchange

International Collage Exhibition and Exchange

The 7th Bakers Dozen international collage exchange has now joined earlier exchanges on the outofsight.co.nz site.

And now....The 8th International Collage Exhibition and Exchange
Exhibiting in April 2006

A list of those artists whose collages have already arrived is HERE.

Artists each make 13 collages, size about 8" X 10" (20cm X 26cm), and send them to me in New Zealand, to arrive by 20th March, 2006.

1. One from each artist will be offered for sale at an exhibition here in New Plymouth, New Zealand with the artist setting the price.
30% commission taken.
That selling exhibition will also be on the Net on the Virtual TART site, at http://virtual.tart.co.nz
allowing the world-wide audience the chance to buy these collages.
If unsold, that collage will rejoin the exchange.
2. One is part of a month-long exhibition on the Virtual TART site during April, will then be exhibited May 3rd to May 27th at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram Texas, (thanks to Ken Malson for setting this up) and become part of their permanent collection, while remaining permanently on exhibition on the outofsight.co.nz Internet site.
3. One will be sent to be part of the permanent collection of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, USA. (Thanks to Hank Foreman for this.)

The other 10 (or 11) are shared out into parcels which are sent back to each contributing artist.

So you send 13 of yours, get back 11 others (or 10 and money from your sale), and you become part of two public collections.

Interested in taking part?
Here's how it works:

Make 13 collages, on 8" X 10" (20cm X 26cm) (actual collage area can be smaller, but the 8 X 10 outer size makes packaging easier). Not bigger than A4 size.

Send :

* your collages,
* your name & address,
* email address if you've got one
* (and the URL of your own website if you've got one and want it listed)
* Mark which collage you want to offer for sale, and the price.
(Make it clear which currency you're talking about!!!!)
30% commission will be taken.
The exchange rate is such that US$100 is about NZ$140 so you might have to lower your usual prices perhaps.
* If you want to select which ones go on the Net and then to Texas, and to Boone too, that's fine
* and send $40 US or $35 Oz or $30 NZ depending on where you live (for handling, website, NZ exhibition, and return postage) Or £20 € 28 CAN$ 45. Or ¥ ... ? Rupees? Just a cheque (or check) or cash, nothing fancy like bank drafts or money orders.

to:
Dale Copeland
7266 Surf Highway
R D 37
Okato
NEW ZEALAND

(Postal code 4652 if you need it,
Phone number 0064 6 752 8126)

to arrive before 20th March, 2006 The exhibition of one work from each artist will be shown on the Virtual TART site at http://virtual.tart.co.nz during April 2006 then permanently on the Net on the outofsight.co.nz site, while the actual collages will be exhibited in the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, and become part of their permanent collection.
One from each artist will be sent to be part of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, USA.
One from each artist will be exhibited and offered for sale in New Plymouth, New Zealand and also on the Net (at 30% commission)
A package of 10 or 11 collages by other artists will be sent to each participating artist by mid May 2006.

Love to use scissors carefully?

Hi,

I'm brand newbie here, but have just recently discovered that collage art, a long time interest of mine, has its own tribe (hooray!)

I am going to dip a toe in the pool my asking what may seem to some (though perhaps not out here) an odd question: do you ever derive intense satisfaction from using scissors to carve an item out of its sheaf of paper? I mean, a certain image that you want to separate from the page it's on ... it's like sculpture in one dimension ... you get those scissors going and it's such an artful feeling. I find that I get some feel for the original artist's work when I do that.

I also have a real thing for making snowflakes. You kow, when you fold a piece of paper in "fours" and then have at it with the scissors before you unfold it and make a truly one of a kind snowflake?

Just had to put that out there ... it is no end of a thrill for me to cut stuff (not myself!) Anybody else dig that?

Yeah, I'm the moderator and I haven't posted any collages in a long time, so here's a link to one of my flickr sets. These collages kept me sane post-college. They were really simple, some not so groundbreaking or creative and usually done in front of the tv, but I swear they saved me from going completely bonkers.

Hi all!
I am in the process of building the web site (NOT as easy as I was led to believe!) bit by bit. At present, the Home page kind of works as a display, but I'm still fighting the buttons as I try to get the rest of the pages constructed and linked.

The "Grand Opening" is scheduled for March 1, (3 weeks away...ack!).
However, the AssemblageArt.Org Forums ARE up and functional!

The address is:
http://assemblageart.org/phpBB2/index.php
You are all most cordially invited to join us there, as well as check on the site, www.AssemblageArt.Org (no www needed, you can just type it into your browser and hit 'Enter').

I hope to be able to provide a central location for Assemblage Art, from its beginnings, through contemporary artists, as well as those museums, galleries, and other venues where assemblage art is presented and promoted to the public.

Hope to see you over at the forums and at AAO soon!

http://www.freecycle.org/

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is run by a local volunteer moderator (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by clicking on the region on the right. It will generate an automatic e-mail which, when sent, will sign you up for your local group and send you a response with instructions on how it works. Or, go directly to the Web site for your local group by clicking on your community's link on the left. Can't find a group near you? You might want to consider starting one (click on "Start a Group" for instructions). Have fun!

The Freecycle Network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson's downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills. The Network provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure!

I'm trying to find some more information on it, but my library offers little and i haven't found much online, either... any suggestions? It looks like a great technique, i like the look of end result. But i need to know a little more detail about HOW to do it or at least how to get started.

paper turning pink when wet-what to do?

I keep having this problem when I get a pice of paper from an old magazine wet, with matte medium or gel or water, especially if there's white in it. The white areas turn pink, and sometimes the non-white areas too (although it's harder to see).

But it's kind of a crapshoot, because not every old white image does that.

At first I thought it was if there was red on the back, but that doesn't seem to be it. Then I thought it happened when the paper wasn't entirely dry from the water yet and I tried to put the medium on it. But that's not it.

I also thought maybe it was only from really old National Geographics, but then I used a clear gel on a piece that's been dry for about two years and had only images from Life magazine it it, and everything white turned pink, even though it hadn't when it was just wet with water and matte medium. It only occurred once the finishing gel was put on.

So I'm confused. Anyone know anything about this? How to prevent it, or if there's a way of knowing which kind of paper will do this?

yesterday
i found an old uninterruptable power supply (UPS).

it is really a very cool kinda junk in that it must include batteries, a power inverter, and a battery charger. All good things.

The batteries are charging up right now.

much,

Global Collage site - upload your images to their site for free...

The Global Collage project aims to empower world-wide artists and audiences. We strongly believe that every person possesses the talent to create art as well as the need to experience it in daily life. Unfortunately, most of us don't have access to a gallery or museum to exhibit our work, nor do we enjoy it in our daily routine. The Global Collage creates a forum in which ordinary people can express their extraordinary talent. As audience members, we have the unique opportunity to experience this worldwide collage of ideas, thoughts, interpretations, and inspirations.

so glad i found it. i love collage art and i've done a few but i'm ready to start on a more professional-looking collage from odds and ends i have collected. i want to use wood for the base/frame, and some of the items in the collage will be 3 dimensional. my question is, what sort of glue is good for collage work, and also, what do you finish it with? i've seen some amazing collages finished w/ resin but that may be a little too heavy duty (and toxic) for me. any suggestions?

I just wanted to share with the tribe my enthusiam over the collage course that starts tonight at the Univ of the Arts in Philadelphia. It's the very first ART class I've taken, so I'm a little nervous, but really excited. I'll keep the tribe posted on the progress of the class and maybe I'll post a few of the collages I finish.

water damaged collages/glue issues/moisture

very sad news
since ive moved into my new home in the woods, we have replaced the floor and put lots of things in the garage for temporary storage.
i had my folders of collages out there for about 2 weeks, and when i went back to take them back into the house i was very distraught to find that a majority of them have been damaged by the high level of humidity due to incessant rains as of late.
get a good look at them online cause all the originals are ruined. even a couple that arent up on the site yet. fucking tragic.
www.touchsamadhi.com/gallery/BSM

hopefully the upcoming calendar and tshirt line will preserve thier original splendor.

luckily all my prints are ok and i have most* of them scanned at high-resolution .tif files. so all is not lost, just the magic of seeing the originals and how they are made with layers, cause otherwise people just think its all photoshop.

so from here on out i do not reccomend the glue which i had previously raged about, "Memory Mount"
because its water soluble and when it gets moist, it soaks thru the paper and discolors it. archival quality, my ass.

anyone with good suggestions for storing finished pieces?
bsm

Is anyone else here familiar with Jonathan Talbot's collage techniques from his book Collage: A New Approach? I"ve used this approach on a number of collage projects. Basically you cover everything in acrylic medium to start, both front and back. After all the elements dry you can move them around until they look just right. Then with the aid of silcone covered sheets, you iron everything down. The best part of this method is you don't have to dismantle your collage to paste everything down. You can see the lastest project I used this technique on in my profile pics.

well, after thinking about doing collage for a loooonggg time and collecting odds and ends (mostly photos, images from magazines, etc), I'm finally getting started on some collage work. I've bought some basic supplies (adhesive, scissors, exacto knife type thingy, etc.). I'm ready to finally get some of these images out of my head and on to..... and that's the problem -- what's a good backing/base material for collage? matte board? wood? paper? whatever you want?? I bought a 2nd hand collage technique book off amazon but haven't got it yet, so I'm waiting to read what it says. I spoke with someone at an art supply store and he said matte board is expesive, but if you buy something too thin and papery it will buckle. He suggested wood. I hadn't thought of that. FYI - i'm planning to start small, something along the lines of an 81/2-11 sheet or smaller, and possibly stuff that can be turned into greeting cards, small gifts, or mounted and framed.
I appreciate all guidance!

I love sharing these with a passion and I hope to be able to reach out to more souls
Love is a beautiful thing.
Any ideas would be great

lazertrans and acrylics

I can't remember who posted the website http://art-e-zine.co.uk/newstuff.html but it is an excellent site! I've got some great ideas and inspirations from the links there! Thank you.

Through this site, i found some info on Lazertrans... i've looked in one local art shop for it (they didn't have it), but i'm wondering if anyone has any experience with it or with something similar... Has anyone tried transferring photos onto clear sheets with gel medium? It looks like a great affect!

I recently bought a new computer and have not been able to transer any of the images from my old computer... and my old scanner doesn't comply with my updated system... i didn't think i really needed a scanner, but it's looking like i might after all....

I'm also new to painting and bought a cheap starter set of acrylic paints. Has anyone been working with acrylics or gouache that has any insight for using these 2 mediums in or out of collages?

sniffin' glue

For those of you that do paper collage specifically... (although it'd also be interesting to hear from those who use other materials as well)

...what kind of glue do you use?

For the longest time I was a huge fan of rubber cement... easy to clean up (just rub it off into little glue balls), spreads nicely and doesn't leave bubbles or lumps, and the edges stay down well. For a while I could find it in 1-litre tins, and I'd use that to refill the little bottles with the brush inside the lid. But it's expensive, sometimes hard to find, and dries out quickly. I've also noticed a couple of my old collages (4-5 years old) are losing their stick... argh!

Recently I've been using plain old glue-stick, because it's cheap (actually, I've been stealing it from work :D) but it's messy and isn't as nice.

Any suggestions?

I did this last year and it is a lot of fun, doing it again this year. Only $30 (plus shipping out your 13 collages to New Zealand) to participate. You get collages back from artists all over the world, a piece in a show in New Zealand, become part of permanent collections in Mexico and France and some web publicity.

in this age of free information, i feel collage is a perfect medium for gathering the work of many and making a new image. it is about collaboration, though the artists whose work we use as source material are usually not in the know that thier art has become part of another's art.
how can we as collagers find peace in knowing that our work is not breaking laws? or stealing the art of others to make our own? or is it understood that collage is a medium where the artist responsible is taking good measures to work in line with thier truth, and creating images from others images is truly enhancing the global consciousness? inspiring others?
lets just say i've been losing sleep over getting recognition for creating art which is comprised of the art of others.
i guess the same goes for dj mixes....
any thoughts?
thanks

This life mask of my daughter Heather was made of white self-hardening clay, then the mask was collaged with tissue paper. The roses on the face were actually on the tissue paper. The gold tissue paper has some sort of plastic in it, and the glue wouldn't soak through it, so keep in mind, not everything labeled 'tissue paper' acts like tissue paper. (As in it's not all permeable with glue'. The heather seeds were from Scotland, where my daughter Heather went on vacation last year.

I would love to make a gift for a special friend. I was thinking of a shadow box or an altered book or collage with the poem Desiderata somehow displayed. Would you have any ideas which aren't hokey that i could use to make this gift? Any I think of seem so juvinile or so, as I said, hokey. I am new to collage, shadow boxes and altered books and I love it as a medium. ~Q~

So, i have a very crafty friend who has a birthday coming up... and i really want to make her something cool and interesting and maybe even functional....... (i'm too freakin' practical, but hey, i'm okay with that). I'm looking for some good gift ideas.... I have a few, but none of them seem quite right. She is a gardener and like i said, super crafty.... artistic and creative. Does anyone have any gift ideas that they'd love to share? I, personally, like boxes, creating boxes, practical or not.... but am looking for some new ideas! THANKS, in advance. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Costume

Our Architecture department puts on this HUuuuuuge Masquerade ball to raise money for the school and Aids prevention/awareness/care programs.. Every April..

The Beaux art ball is kind of a custom for architecture schools to put on. Ours is really one of the only ones that are still like the originals.. now most are more like Black Tie events.

So... the costumes of these events are as Wild as you can get... as in... strips of electrical tape.

I was a fish for this last one... wasn't as wild as the electrical tape (I'm a little more consevative then that).. but it was still pretty neat.

I want to be a bird this year.. I have an old corset and some thigh length leggings that I'm going to cover in feathers...

Dilema:
its the wings that I'm worried about... I want them to be as realistic as possible... nothing store bought...
Don't want them to look like Angel wings...
If I could get them to be movable... that would be awesome... They also need to be bigger... Inspiration (Marvels Hawkgirl)

So I need some Ideas...
What material should the base material be made out of (Besides feathers)?... needs to be VERY sturdy.. but not heavy.
I was thinking papermache...
should they be folded... or should I make them movable...
if I made them movable... Would they have to be smaller so I wouldn't knock anyone out... or do you think that I could get away with making huge ones..
Need some ideas on how to connect them to me... as inconspicuous as possible... without having them flop around.

Let me know what you think:)

New Collages

Ive been getting more into form rather than layering and this is the result of that. Not to mention trying to work the commercial aspects of alot of this work into the collage itself.
(ie the pathways type was supposed to look like a bridge/path between the elements)
http://www.phidelity.com/ph2/album24/front_001

the second one is just cute.
http://www.phidelity.com/ph2/album24/luminous

this last one is a very simple collage since not much was needed.
anyone else have any new work to share?

Things I covet...

Artists covet the weirdest things. When I was a child the neighbors threw out a few boxes of half-painted plaster molded placques and statuary...I had to have them all. Then I realized that was selfish and greedy, but I still wanted them.
I progressed on to having to have wallpaper sample books and the old mccalls and simplicity sewing pattern books from fabric stores. I remember going through a telephone wire phase (you know the pretty colored wire that phone lineman use)? I used to lurk at the dumpster by the telephone company hoping to get a glob of wire to make rings out of. I was also a nut for feathers and sea shells. And the bark off of paper-birch trees. I was in nirvana when I found out pine needles were useful for making baskets. My current insanity is raffia. It's cheap, you can dye it, it's indestructable and it's great for weaving hats.
The my friend showed me how to pound out yucca leaves to make twine. We also made digiridoos out of yucca stalks. (And a quiver too). It seems there is no end to the madness.
For a while I was addicted to rubber stamps. Then I took the linoleum block carving techniques I learned in high school, and combined them with eraser carving. Then I could make my own stamps! I no longer had to depend on retail sources. I could go carve just the right rabbit, or just the right arcane symbol. (I don't know why, but so many rubber stamp stores are terribly conservative, and unless you want to buy Thumper or Jesus loves pack rats on a rubber stamp, you are SOL. For a time I was hardpressed to find an ankh or a nude woman stamp or anything vaguely artistic and not saccarine. (Thankfully that has gotten better w/ the internet shopping).
All of these things can be applied to collage/assemblage.
One problem with collage being a fad of sorts, is all the special things we used to use are now mass produced and sold by stores like Michaels. If it's in a store, I don't want it. I don't want my collage to have the same mass produced scrabble tiles or mail tags or colored eyelets. So I'm really glad I know how to weave, knit, crochet, dye, cut, slice, glue, gesso, and all the other things that it takes to stay on the cutting edge. (ooh bad pun). Art makes my soul sing.

I'm new to this entire Tribe.com thing...
Actually... I'm new to a lot of things...
I don't really have a website up... I do... but because its free and because i have to many pictures on it,.... I don't.
It was kind of like a test page... to see if I really wanted to put my stuff out there.
Now that I know that I do.. I'm trying to build my own REAL site...
I've been into collages for the past 3 or 4 years... and into paper since I could hold scissors.
I took this love and am now an Architecture student... Great thing when you love paper and creating with it.

If you want to see some of my work, I will give you the address... but remember.. it was a test site.. on geocities.. so its crap. All it was meant to do was get my work online.

-let me know-

Hi there... Im glad to have found fellow collage enthusiasts. My name is kris I do art under the moniker Phidelity, at some point in my past collage became my preferred method of expression, nothing blatantly obvious as to why. It just fit the "so much to say so little space" mentality my head seems mired in at times.

I primarily work in the digital realm at the moment since it keeps my room alot cleaner ;)

so heres some of my work and ill be scrolling through the archives checking out whats already been posted

I have some butterflies I'm just dying to incorporate into a piece. However, I'm not really sure how to preserve them/apply them on to canvas, paper, etc. and keep them looking good.

I've invisioned using perhaps wax to seal them onto canvas and then i've thought of using a varnish or polyeurthane, but am affraid of what the chemicals in these things may do to the insect in regards to color, etc.

Any thoughts out there?

I have an idea. what if everyone in the group worked on a piece and posted it. We could have atheme and then discuss the work after it is posted.

I'll suggest boxes as the first theme. Maybe it isn't fair since I just posted 2 boxes. But if you all don't like the theme veto it and give another. It is a great way to get some work done and posted.

I've seen photos and prints before but nothing captures the amazing richness of texture and layering seeing them in person. I sent long minutes decyphering technique and materials. Wow.

I really love to use dried flowers and leaves in my collages/ shadow boxes. I do have a flower press (2 sheets of basic plywood type material with sheets of cardboard and paper in the middle and tightened w/ screws for the pressing) but sometimes the plant material will rot a bit (i live in a coastal town -- the air is generally moist). I've recently experimented with silica gel crystals, but have found them to leave an undesireable residue on the plant. I've read this can be brushed off w/ a small paintbrush... i'll try that, but i still see the white-ish hue left by the crystals. The same thing happens whether or not i dry them in the microwave. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

I just posted some of my most recent paintings. They are oil on canvas. When the paint is completely dry, I glue on foil leaves that i have individually cut and scored. I accidentally uploaded one twice and but I can't delete it.

Let me know your thoughts on this direction and some ideas onwhere to go next.

I've been a freak for collage and assemblage work for as long as I can remember. I'd like a fresh infusion of ideas, so feel free to post your work here, discuss techniques, or gloat about unbelievably cool found objects.

Organizing

I am looking for some good ideas for organizing and storing my found objects and art supplies (paper, various sized photos, cut-outs, rocks, and all those things that i collect that MAYBE i'll find a use for SOMETIME). I'm hoping for something inexpensive (could even be homemade) that doesn't take up a lot of space, but would be helpful in my work space. Any ideas? What do ya'll use?
